Our festival, like the European Union itself, has grown considerably over the past decade. The European Union, comprised of 15 countries at the time of our first festival in 1998, now has 27 members. The European Union Film Festival, from modest beginnings, has grown to become one of Pacific Cinémathèque’s signature events, and one of the most popular programs on our annual calendar.
Vancouver filmgoers have demonstrated time and again that they hold a special place in their hearts and in their minds for the great national cinemas, and the great film artists, of Europe.
Each year, this festival offers viewers a dynamic look at the strength and diversity of contemporary European cinema — a chance to sample significant new and notable works from a wide array of Europe’s greatest filmmaking countries.
Since Pacific Cinémathèque was founded in 1972, our mandate has been to celebrate excellence in the art of cinema, and to provide access to the very best films, historical and contemporary, from Canada and around the world. We take pride in hosting this festival, and great pleasure in working with the Canadian-based representatives of the European Union and its member states to make it a success.
I hope you will find much to enjoy in the eclectic line-up of films assembled for this year’s 10th annual festival.
