A group of young Greeks must contend with the myriad troubles bequeathed them by an often-corrupt older generation in this social comedy by veteran writer-director Nikos Perakis, whose previous works include the 1984 Greek hit Loafing and Camouflage. “The film follows the parallel, often intertwining, stories as well as the common fates of a group of very different young people over a 24-hour period during summertime, from the hallways of Athens airport to the beaches of the Saronic Gulf and the pastures on Mount Psiloritis. What the heroes have in common are the various problems they have inherited from their unscrupulous parents. Having remained out of the fray, they now find themselves in over their heads, as the sudden loss of prosperity forces them to grow up” (Thessaloniki I.F.F.). Colour, 35mm, in Greek with English subtitles. 104 mins.
(Bajo las estrellas)
Spain 2007. Director: FÉlix Viscarret
With: Alberto San Juan, Emma SuÁrez, JuliÁn VillagrÁn, Violeta RodrÍguez, Luz Valdenebro
“The story of a struggling trumpet player in Madrid who returns to his native village in northern Spain on the death of this father, Félix Viscarret’s debut feature, Under the Stars, won four awards — best film, best actor (Alberto San Juan), best director and best first screenplay — at Spain’s national film festival in Malaga. . . It follows the emotional journey of this self-centered musician, who leaves his girlfriend behind to attend the funeral and inquire about his inheritance. Reuniting with his brother Lalo, a newly recovering alcoholic and aspiring scrap-metal sculptor, he also reconnects with Lalo’s temperamental fiancé Nines, with whom he almost had a fling years earlier. . . Viscarret’s intimate film evokes the claustrophobia and paranoia of small-town life . . . San Juan preciously captures his character’s uneasy mixture of big-city bravado and vulnerability in a rural setting” (Stephen Holden, New York Times). “A drama that combines quirkiness with poetry and more than consolidates the international rep writer-director Viscarret established with his shorts. . . . With an ace performance from San Juan, who makes the movie his own by simply flooding it with humanity” (Jonathan Holland, Variety). Colour, 35mm, in Spanish with English subtitles. 108 mins.
