You Am I
LITHUANIA/GERMANY 2006. DIRECTOR: KRISTIJONAS VILDZIUNAS
CAST: ANDRIUS BIALOBZESKIS, MYKOLAS VILDZIUNAS, DAIVA JOVAISIENE, JURGA JUTAITE, RENATA VEBERYTE-LOMAN

An oddball back-to-nature fable about a Vilnius architect who gives it all up for life in a tree house, Lithuanian fi lmmaker Kristijonas Vildziunas’s You Am I was selected for the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes last year. The forest abode of Baron (Andrius Bialobzeskis) is no ordinary tree house, but a stylized, futurist marvel of glass, which he puts together using sophisticated alpinist equipment. The hero’s wilderness idyll, which includes occasional visitations from a strange dream-woman, takes a romantic turn when he discovers Dominyka (Jurga Jutaite), an attractive kindred spirit, living nearby. But he’s also got a romantic rival in aspiring novelist Kristupas (Mykolas Vildziunas), who may be dreaming the whole story up. “A fresh and inspiring fi lm that invites creative viewing ... Enigmatic, contemporary and slow-paced ... As dreamlike as reality can be” (I.F.F. Rotterdam). Colour, 35mm, in English and Lithuanian with English subtitles. 87 mins.

Liubi
GREECE 2005. DIRECTOR: LAYIA YIOURGOU
CAST: ALEXIS GEORGOULIS, EVGENIA KAPLAN, LENA KITSOPOULOU, NIKOS GEORGAKIS, OLGA DAMANI

“This steamy Greek romance has all the elements of a good soap opera — lust, greed, jealousy, revenge — but unfolds with unusual naturalism. A handsome ladies’ man (Alexis Georgoulis) and his family are celebrating his engagement when the title character (Evgenia Kaplan), a lovely young Russian woman, arrives to begin her job as caregiver for the disabled mom. The woman’s modesty and vulnerability make her the polar opposite of the man’s fiancée, and soon he starts finding excuses to knock off work so he can help out at home. Writer-director Layia Yiourgou adroitly juggles plot twists and shifting points of view as she explores how one can be both blindsided and liberated by love” (Andrea Grovall, Chicago Reader). “A delicately observed drama ... Liubi backgrounds a cross-cultural romance against the immigrant-labour surplus and
ethnic prejudices in today’s Greece ... Deft direction and performances make the picture’s small virtues add up” (Dennis Harvey, Variety). Colour, 35mm, in Greek with English subtitles. 96 mins.
